SCIENCE BEHIND DRUGS AND PREVENTION PROGRAMS

SCIENCE BEHIND DRUGS AND PREVENTION - 4th Grade (full details)
Kids face tough decisions, especially regarding the issue of drug use.  The newly designed “Science Behind Drugs and Prevention” program helps kids make healthy choices and lead a drug-free life.  Program participants first learn how drugs affect the body systems, especially the brain, which can lead to addiction.  Using statistical data, students next dispel the myth that “everyone is doing drugs.”  Finally, students practice refusal skills which arm them with tools to help them make good decisions regarding drug use.  This interactive program allows kids to utilize touch-screen software, simulate the disorientation of alcohol through special glasses, and actually touch a real pig lung!

SCIENCE BEHIND DRUGS AND PREVENTION – 7th - 8th Grades (full details) (85 minutes)
Middle school opens doors for students.  It also provides an environment where many kids are exposed to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs for the first time.  The “Science Behind Drugs and Prevention” program helps kids make healthy choices when faced with the decision whether or not to try drugs.  Participants learn how different drugs affect the respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems as well as the mechanisms that cause addiction.  Students next use audience response technology to gain insight into perceived versus actual drug use among their peers.  Finally, students brainstorm refusal techniques to effectively turn down an offer of drugs from a peer.
